MARRIAGE BOND –
JESSE BENJAMIN HALL TO NECCESSA STILLWELL
We can learn a number of things from this bond both about the
persons involved and about the United States as well.
The country had, by 1838, switched from the English Pound monetary
system to US dollars. Rather than for 500 Pounds “Current Money”
this bond is for $1,000 dollars. This bond is made payable to
the State of North Carolina rather than to the Governor.
The Court Clerk, W. Welch, still used the alphabetic “f” character
to mean a double “s” but Jesse himself signed his name using the two
characters. “Neccessa” is misspelled. The father of Neccessa is
Jacob Stillwell.
Jesse had a good friend in Allen McBroom who was willing to stand
good for his bond.
We have an example of Jesse Hall’s signature.
This bond system was abolished 30 years later in 1868 in favor of a
license and minister’s return system. Bonds did not generate any tax
income but a license put a tax on every marriage preformed. The date
of the bond is often taken as the date of marriage but it could be,
and often was, preformed on a different date. |
